Greece to Automatically Assign Personal Numbers to All Citizens and Residents by September 5th

As part of Greece’s transition to a unified digital identification system, all citizens and legal residents will be assigned a Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός), which is a unique and permanent 12-character identifier. This number will gradually replace existing identifiers such as the AFM (Tax ID) and AMKA (Social Security Number).
To view your assigned Personal Number, you can log in to myInfo.gov.gr using your Taxisnet credentials or check the gov.gr Wallet app, where the number will appear alongside your digital ID. This Personal Number will serve as your official identifier for all public sector services, and eventually for many private sector services as well.
Who is the personal number for?
You need a Personal Number if you are:
- A Greek citizen (whether residing in Greece or abroad),
- A foreign national who is a legal resident of Greece,
- An expat, EU citizen, or third-country national with:
- a residence permit,
- a Greek AFM (Tax ID),
- or you access services like healthcare, insurance, employment, or taxation.
The Personal Number (Προσωπικός Αριθμός) is replacing multiple identification numbers used across government systems, such as AFM and AMKA, becoming the unified identifier for:
- Tax filings
- Health services
- Social security (EFKA)
- Digital IDs
- Education
- Public service appointments
- And more
Therefore, if you are a legal resident (Golden Visa holder), even if you are not a citizen, a Personal Number will be assigned to you automatically by September 5, 2025.
