Why Hollywood is filming in Greece: Top movies, locations & production hubs

From A-list stars to major studio productions, Greece is fast becoming one of Europe’s most sought-after filming destinations.

Names like Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon and Christopher Nolan are just some of the high-profile figures recently drawn to the country as its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage continue to capture Hollywood’s attention.

Over the past decade, Greece has steadily transformed into a premier hub for international film productions.

From the vibrant streets of Athens to the sun-drenched islands of the Aegean Sea, filmmakers are increasingly choosing Greece as their cinematic backdrop.

This growing presence not only showcases the country’s visual appeal but also reinforces its rising importance as a destination for international investment, including real estate and residency opportunities.

The Riders

In recent days, Brad Pitt has been filming scenes for his upcoming drama The Riders, on location in Nea Makri and downtown Athens.

Much of the production, however, has taken place on the picturesque island of Hydra, renowned for its preserved architecture and timeless atmosphere. In the film, Pitt plays a father searching across Europe for his missing wife and daughter-a narrative that blends emotional depth with suspense.

Production began in Ireland before relocating to Greece, where filming is expected to continue for several weeks.

Greece attracts major film productions

Pitt’s presence is the latest sign of a broader trend. Greece continues to attract major international productions, building on a strong cinematic legacy. Iconic films such as Mamma Mia!—shot on Skopelos and Skiathos-first introduced global audiences to the country’s idyllic island landscapes.

More recently, The Lost Daughter, filmed on Spetses, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, partially shot in Porto Heli, have highlighted Greece’s versatility, accommodating both large-scale productions and more intimate, character-driven stories.

What distinguishes Greece is not only its visual appeal, but the remarkable diversity it offers within relatively short distances.

Crystal-clear coastlines, rugged mountains, ancient ruins, and vibrant urban centres coexist seamlessly, allowing filmmakers to recreate a wide range of settings without ever leaving the country.

The impact of these productions extends far beyond the screen. International audiences are not simply watching stories unfold – they are experiencing Greece itself: its landscapes, its architecture, and its way of life.

Blanchett based in Kalamata

Further reinforcing this momentum, Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett recently travelled to our shores to film her latest project, Sweetsick. She was based in Kalamata, in the country’s south, throughout the shoot.

The wider region of Messinia, particularly the rugged landscapes of Mani, provided a striking natural backdrop for a story centred on return and reconciliation. Directed by Alice Birch in her feature debut, the film was shot across locations including Kardamyli, Trachila, and Petrovouni.

An international production with a distinctly Greek soul, Sweetsick was filmed in both Greek and English. The landscape itself is elevated beyond mere setting, becoming a character in its own right – one that reflects the emotional tension, serenity, and catharsis of the story.

Matt Damon in The Odysseus

Just weeks earlier, Matt Damon was also in Greece for another major production. The popular actor is portraying Odysseus in The Odyssey, a large-scale adaptation directed by Christopher Nolan.

With an estimated budget of $250 million, the film is expected to be a visually ambitious retelling of The Odyssey, chronicling the hero’s long journey home following the Trojan War.

Among the key filming locations is Almyrolakas Beach, which was transformed into a large-scale production set. There, Damon stepped into the role of the legendary king of Ithaca, filming pivotal scenes under Nolan’s direction.

Greece becomes a central character

As global filmmakers continue to seek out visually striking and versatile locations, Greece is firmly establishing itself as a leading destination for international productions. With its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural depth, and modern infrastructure, the country is no longer just a backdrop but a central character in storytelling on the world stage.

As more high-profile projects choose Greece, its role in the global film industry is set to grow even stronger in the years ahead.
